The Millions of Robins Hiding Amongst You

Robin Williams suicide this week has personally hit me very hard. There have been times as I stand thinking about him that I am brought close to tears. In reality as I now write my eyes strain with that strange pang of warmth and glossiness that comes upon one knowing full well what lies ahead. Why I ask has this wonderful persons decision to give up the battle hit me so hard. I can and must admit with great sadness that I am Robin Williams and with further sadness recognize that there are millions more of us out there. There is no need to have known him to be him nor do the others, for we all share a common bond of laughter and in most cases laughter at our own expense. I do not need to have known the man to recognize the anguish when viewing the world. To understand how each and every tragedy that befalls our species somehow deeply affects us. Mr. Williams often talked about his struggles with Alcohol and drugs, a defence mechanism of showing our frailties to the world and the belief that somehow that shall strengthen us threw collective knowledge.  It is as much a cry for help as it is a brilliant flag for laughter. If I tell everyone how messed up I am then it is out there and in knowing this I will take strength from that. For to fall off the proverbial wagon again would be to let all my friends down, everyone who has laughed at me and with me at myself, are indeed all my friends.

You see Robin Williams was not just a brilliant comic but to many of us who suffer from mental illness he was an exuberant mirror we could see straight threw. In seeing through that veil of self recrimination and finger pointing at the absurdity of ones own life we drew strength. I think that is what has hit me so hard. All that strength in front of the world was not enough for him, how therefore could it possibly be enough for me and the millions of other Robins out there.

How many of us Robins do the same within our lives? How many of us poke fun at ourselves and bring laughter to others? How many of us pronounce our frailties to the world in an attempt to say it makes it better? How many of us see the leading Robin as a shinning example of coping in a world that seems to have gone mad? Do we now sit or stand and stare into that space in front of us that is everywhere but nowhere as our mind ponders why? I do and many of us I think do as well. We run through those questions, was it all to much? Was the inundation of hate, distrust, death and fear spewing forth from the TV just so overwhelming that no level of reactionary manic humour could overcome the reality. Is our defence of announcing to the world our failings simply not enough to conquer our own repetitive thinking and our dark thoughts. The over analysis that engulfs all us Robins where we stare into that space and analyse our analysis. It is a feedback loop where often the only exit off the thought highway is brief and fleeting moment where you pronounce I don’t care any more and see the humour in it. When that exit is missed it gets harder and harder to find and often it leads to desperation, an explosive moment of physical humour and wacky voices even in the privacy of our own home. The more explosive, the more wacky it is, is nothing more than a reflection of the level of desperation we have to get off that looping highway of anguish.

We Robin’s care for people, our heart is on our sleeve and not just for friends or family but for the world. We bring laughter, we bring solace, we bring love and understanding all things in equal measure to balance against the inner beliefs that we wrongly feel are not allowed us.

Captain my Captain I walked as you did but I can no longer do so. I must, and us Robin’s must, now find our own stride as you once so wisely advised.

TIM HORTONS FOUND TO BE ADDING ADDICTIVE CHEMICAL TO COFFEE

timhortonsIn a stunning report released by Health Canada in conjunction with the W.H.O it has been reported that Tim Horton’s has been adding an addictive chemical to its coffee. The Chemical Ethylphenidate Hyrdocloride has recently been discovered to have highly addictive qualities. Abbreviated EH, very little is known about the chemical other than what is known as the ‘Fonze’ affect. First noticed in the 70’s famous Happy Days character Author Fonzarelli where symptoms included a raised thumb while pronouncing the abbreviation of the chemical in a long drawn out breath, as in ‘ehhhhhhhhh’. It is not known why the reactions have changed when added to coffee to a short abbreviated EH but this has become very noticeable in Canada where one can hear the repetitive phrase EH throughout the streets and parties. At present, Health Canada is not requiring a warning be placed on Tim Hortons Coffee products. When reached for a statement Tim Hortons media manager, Thirsty FlipRim simply replied ‘no problem eh!’

A Message for those Suffering from Mental Health Challenges {ALFUBO}

FB ALFUBO PICEarlier I did a post on Facebook asking people to indicate if they suffer from mental health problems. The post is the picture. There are several reasons I made that post/request and now I would like to explain them.

First and foremost I wanted each of you to realize that you are not alone, that there are many people out there who suffer varying degrees of the same issue. Whether it is PTSB, depression, anxiety, etc. you are not alone. In fact they say that 1 in 3 people have ‘mental health’ issues. This is a really important statistic and I will come back to it so remember the 1 in 3. This means that when you head to the mall, the grocery store or the gas station there is a good chance you just brushed past a person who is dealing with the same thing you are. In fact if you take the opportunity to look them in the eyes and think about it perhaps they are looking back wondering the same thing about you. There is a stigma attached with having a mental health challenge. There is often, not everyone, shame or embarrassment. That stigma often adds to our issues and it in essence becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. A cyclical downward spiral of those nasty thoughts that take us on rides we do not wish to go on. Something you should also be aware of. For every person who replied to the post stating their mental health issue I know of the same number who have chosen not to. Even more importantly, today 11 other Facebook users sent me personal messages to indicate they also suffered. They took heart and had the bravery to admit it simply by seeing all of your responses. They are not ready yet but they took a big step. I replied to each of them the same way; ‘When you’re ready until then I am here if you need someone to listen’. So your replies helped people you did not even know!

Another reason I wanted to ask that question on Facebook and write this subsequent blog piece is in regards to the 2nd Amendment changes in the US presently going on. This may seem like a bit of a right, left, up or down turn but stay with me for a moment. First of all I am not going to get into a debate about the whole gun thing so do not even go there. What I want to raise is the question of background checks under the context of mental health issues. It is early days yet, but there has not yet been one mention in either the political sphere or popular media as to how you ‘define’ Yes or No on a permit in the context of mental health. You see there is a big difference between someone who suffers from schizophrenia to bi-polar to depression to anxiety. The problem is that the argument is under the umbrella of mental disease. For starters mental disease is a very negative term but I understand the arguments for it, again not going to argue it. The problem with the term mental disease is that it kind of acts as a reverse ‘umbrella’ in that everyone including myself would fall under it, perhaps, which results in all of us getting wet and the rest of society remaining dry. It’s a broad stroke that may or may not paint someone with panic attacks or anxiety or other mental health issues as being a danger to society, gun or no gun. Now personally I do not agree with anyone having a gun but that is just my opinion. I do however find it rather ironic that the people who are incredibly paranoid about their government are the ones arguing against mental health back ground checks. In my opinion they should be under the umbrella. But I am getting off topic. The point being, if you have a mental health challenge just be sure to pay attention to the way the argument goes. It may become far too easy to be labeled as a danger simply under the context that you are not allowed to own a firearm. I like many people with mental health issues such as depression, panic attacks, anxiety, etc. firmly belong in ALFUBO. Although admittedly this paragraph may have sounded a bit paranoid!

Now, the final and most important part of this little diatribe, the 1 out of 3. So according to the stats 33% of society has some form of mental health issues. Let’s think on that for a moment and I want you to think of the word ‘NORMAL’. Think a bit more…ok just another second, ok. The word normal defines a ‘normative’ range of values within a set numbers. In the case of mental health it’s not numbers but rather behaviors, thoughts and actions. These behaviors are categorized, organized, cross referenced and dumped under labels and sub labels with cross references to each other in a book entitled the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).  Now this is an important and necessary book, but I will point out that they are on the 4th version and it used to contain Homosexuality and at one point they tried to add PMS. That is until the women’s lib movement in the 70’s heard about it. Would have loved to be a fly on the wall in THAT meeting, talk about bitch slapped! But again I digress; bear with me, back to normative. There is also the concept of normative sociology. A brief but extreme example: Let’s say there is a society where everyone is covered head to toe in tight tartan spandex wraps, including their face, hands, feet etc. but their genitals are exposed. They all wear large helicopter hats that only spin when they are aroused resulting in very a loud whirring noise. I will give you a second to get that image in your head, good, now stop laughing. Now of course this is completely normal to this society and they would consider our life abnormal or deviant. For me I think there society would be funny as hell to watch although perhaps very inefficient!  Now if you think I am going to go down that path of ‘ya ya normal for you is not the normal for another’ then you’re wrong so shut up and read. If you suffer mental health challenges as I do then I can guaranteed you have said some of the following to yourself in one form or another:

  1. Why am I like this
  2. Why can’t I be like my brother/sister
  3. What’s wrong with me
  4. Why can’t I be normal

I got news for you, you are normal in our society. Now don’t go and think that I am inferring that being depressed or any other mental health is static and unchangeable for you simply because I just said you are normal. The only constant is change, period. This is not my point so keep reading! Where was I, yes you are in fact normal. In fact you exist within the 33% percent of society. If you want to use a mental health spectrum under the concept of sociology normative 16.5% is outside of the norm to either the left or the right of the 66% smack in the middle. Think of it this way to the far left we have depression and as we move right we get happier. In the middle is just great but then keep going. You move towards Manic, Delusional and Schizophrenic. You can use the same idea with Overt Trust through Paranoia as well if you want, along with many others such as hate and love! Now if 33% of the population has mental health issues one can obviously assume 66% percent do not. That is one hell of a big f’n normative when you think about it. Now even the so called normal folks have great days and of course really crappy days, that’s why the normative is so dam big. Now you are saying to yourself true but it does not apply to me I am always depressed or I constantly have anxiety or I have to take medication to get through the day. Ok, your right, fair enough but may I point out that this is only one aspect of who you are, there are many aspects of you as a human being. Just like there are many aspects of normative, trust to paranoia, depressive to schizophrenic, love to hate or rich to poor. Do you judge a person on one aspect of their life? No of course not! So why should you judge yourself on aspect of your own life. Don’t tell me you don’t because you have asked the afore mentioned questions at some point in your life, remember the ‘why am I like this’ etc. Those are judgments of yourself, so stop it!

I am going to tell you one last secret I have discovered by talking to all of you so called mentally diseased people. To a person I have found each of you to be open, caring, funny, engaged. You will laugh at yourself and your mistake before you laugh at others. You show concern and affection daily for people you have never met. You are not afraid to discuss your life, your loves your dreams. You are not afraid to get enraged over stupidity and stand up and say so, some loudly, others quietly. You also all really tend to like cats, which is indeed mental. When I think of the ‘norms’ out there I see people who are what? People who are concerned about their status symbols, take extreme positions on issues and thrive to keep up with the Jonses! They rarely share, open up, take one on the chin for a laugh. I don’t know about you but that I would much rather be in the company of the former than the later.

So the next time someone asks how are you doing you reply A Little Fucked Up But Ok, ALFUBO.

You are normal in all the ways that are important just try to remember that when you can!

Twas the Night Before Christmas {a naughty poem}

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
the kids where a sleep and the wife was passed out!

As I crept into bed, on that frosty night,
an evil thought did come, I thought I just might.

So I snuggled to my wife an I thought to myself,
she is passed out drunk, I can do this no doubt.

So I wiggled and I jiggled, an with a wee little grin,
just a little more push, I am surely in!

Then to my delight, in it did slide,
with a little manoeuvring, right between her thighs.

I did not miscalculate, I shall not lie,
up her arse it went, as she let out a small sigh

Then to my astonishment and great demise,
she let a huge fart out that brought tears to my eyes.

The pressure was so great, I came out in a fly,
my balls blew apart and I screamed and I cried.

Awoke with a start did my wife at that moment,
yelling at me ‘where the fuck are you pokin’

Call am ambulance I did scream at her,
my left nuts on the mattress my right ones over there!

Serves you right she yelled at me,
for sticking your thingy where it should not be!

So on the Christmas eve, do try remember,
your wife’s arse is sacred and is not for your member!

Cheers and Merry Christmas

10 Bells

Another short story I wrote many years ago…

1 Bell

He knew this day would come, the man in the white coat told him, it was inevitable.  There was nothing he could do he had said, there was no cure known.

2 Bells

He lay there resigned to his fate, admonishing himself for his failure.  His failure to have found a way through, a way out, a way to save himself and the others.

3 Bells

He was resigned, but to die for his past transgressions was a difficult burden to bare.  They did not know the whole truth, they did not see him for what he was.  The man in the white coat had told him it would be that way.

4 Bells

Closer now.  He can feel his heart beat increasing, feel the flushness of his own face as the end drew near. ‘You do not know what you have done, you cannot see the truth’.  The man in the white coat smiled.

5 Bells

He knew what he was he knew what he could and would do.  He could see it in his eyes, in the eyes of his sycophants his followers.  He could see because he had always been there.

6 Bells

Since childhood he had seen the truth but had not the courage, the courage to do what must be done.  This was his admonishment, not his past acts but his failure to see the plan through.  To do it incorrectly was his sin.  The man in the white coat smiled at him with knowing and caring eyes.

7 Bells

His failure was he had missed.  He had missed his one opportunity to save those for the future to fix things for all, for only he knew the truth.  He alone new the truth of the man in the white coat, as he had been there all along.  It was his creation that was causing the pain that he was now dying from.

8 Bells

2 Bells to go and the end would come.  Perhaps it was a relief to be gone as all the others.  Released from the grip, released from the doubt and responsibility. Released from the knowledge of what he had created, raised and nurtured and the horror that it was brining to all.

9 Bells

The man in the white coat looked on deep into his eyes.  He knew the truth, he knew the last barrier to his happiness was about to depart.  He knew it would be better for all as he had the plan he knew the way out.

10 Bells

Pump 1 called the man in dark suit.  The man in the white suit looked on.  Pump 2, came the call.  He felt the cure pump into his veins, the cure to his shame.  Pump 3 he heard and he looked on.  He looked into the eyes of his son in the white suit with bible clutched in hand and hidden smile only meant for him. He knew the truth of the prophet he had raised, he knew he would bring an end to all, the sickness that he was.  But he had missed and killed so many to stop him and now he must die, he must die for the future sins of his son.

He let out his last breath and was still.  The man in the white suit stepped from his chair and exited the room with his followers on heel.  He smiled for he knew the truth of what he was, he knew that nothing could stop him.  The man, the preacher, the false prophet exited the execution chamber to the cheer of the thousands expecting his appearance.  The cheer rose and rose up and the man in the white suit smiled.

“Time to get to work” he said.

The Death of It

This is a fun little poem I wrote many years ago and had up on an older blog. Thought I would post it up here for a bit of fun…

With great trepidation and fear in its heart,
It entered the tunnel, at the very start.

One step, two steps and then one more.
The predator awaited to end it, forever, lock that door.

It knew this day was coming, its’ pack had told it so.
The fact that it ran the first time in, did not matter any more.

With eyes of anger, the predator stood.
Awaiting its arrival, like it knew it could.

The pack did push it, from behind.
They did not care, they knew, it was not there time.

Third step, fourth step and then it was five.
It knew all too well, it was time to die.

They said it must do this, it was good for the soul.
The pack would exist, go on, despite its disposal.

Sixth step, fifth step and then it was there.
The predator looked at it, with little despair.

Then a man appeared, carrying a great spear.
A hunter perhaps, to save it from its’ fear.

The hunter approached with smiles and care.
It gave a thumbs up, to the predator that stood there.

It knew its day, had finally come.
How could it had thought different, been so dumb.

The pack enveloped it, eager for the kill.
To them this was nothing, but a cheap thrill.

And then the hunter, did open its mouth.
And the predator rose up, ready to pounce.

Then the words came, the command to kill.

“Do you John, take this women in holy matrimony…”

Ordering Chinese Food

I am pulling this in from my FaceBook as it was certainly worth a laugh. Do not think any of us who have ordered wonderful Chinese food has not experienced this. The strange thing is for some reason we would not be convinced the food was authentic if we did not have to struggle understanding the person on the other end of the phone. Enjoy…

Apple Files Patent for iPad Masturbation

Given Apples recent successes with patent filings for things such as rounded corners on buttons and page flip graphics, not to mention the numerous law suits against competitors, it should be of no surprise that they are attempting to push the envelope. In a filling earlier today Apple requested of the U.S. patent office to patent masturbation by people using the iPad. In the filing Apple contends that the iPads high definition screen and the innate portability of the device allows users to take the device to private locations, such as the bedroom and pleasure themselves. A spokes person for Apple, Mia Likeitalot, stated ‘there is clearly no other device on the market, past or present that provides the lifelike quality that the iPad does. Given this and the fact that the majority of men masturbate continually combined with the iPads portability, our device is the device of choice for self gratification. We at Apple feel that lacking any real foreseeable creativity within our organization, have no choice but to leverage the luxury that we have provided men around the world over the past several years.’

During a Q&A session with the Apple development team and management, Apple explained how they envision the collection of fees when an individual uses the iPad to pleasure themselves. ‘Presently our development team is hard at work leveraging the technology presently in the iPad along with future enhancements’. When pressed for further information Apple representatives stated ‘we are presently testing a biometric sensor that will detect heart rate, increased blood pressure, penis enlargement and rhythmic vibrations . With the addition of the biometric sensor we are confident to 99.9% that we can detect when the iPad is being used for the purpose of self gratification. When the device detects self gratification a pop up message will appear requesting a fee be paid directly to Apple’. Apple reps went on to say, ‘we are attempting to ensure that the message to the user will be country friendly, for example if the user is in the U.K. it will state ‘Are you wanking? Please…’ or the US ‘Are you spanking the monkey…’. etc. We at Apple wish to ensure that the user’s experience is not interfered with and that only one hand will be required to acknowledged the payment request.’ Continue reading

BREAKING NEWS – Santa Dead In Fly by Shooting

In a tragic but foreseeable event this morning Santa was shot and killed by the native peoples’ of the North as they attempted to bring down his flying Caribou. A spokesperson for the group reported that they had been lobbying the federal conservative government for years to prevent Santa from doing practice runs over the area due the health risk posed by the falling frozen caribou excrement. As Mr. Ignogluc stated ‘you have to understand a frozen piece of caribou shit falling at terminal velocity can take your head right off!’.  In a sad twist of events the request sent to the Federal Conservatives and Mr. Harper’s office had an attached rider requesting that Canadians recognize the 40 names for snow presently used by the northern peoples. In a leaked statement from a cabinet member, it was reported that the première of Quebec, Pauline Marois, refused to allow the additions as they had no French language equivalent. In an unconfirmed statement Mrs. Marois was overheard to say that the native peoples of the north had no rights to make such request as they had not contributed to Canada in any way, unlike French Canadians who had provided poutine. Mr. Harper also denied the request, as in a fit of paranoia he misunderstood the words for snow to be a secret coded message by environmental groups and David Suzuki to prevent the drilling of oil in Alberta and the north. Please Don’t Think Me Normal

‘Normal’ is one of the adjectives up there with ‘nice’ but in my opinion is far more insulting. Nice is something people say in regards to someone they know, ‘Ya he is a nice guy’ and is not often directed at you within a conversation. Certainly it does happen on occasion but I do not take offence at the speakers inability to use more creative language. Perhaps a thesaurus for Christmas I think is due the speaker! However, ‘Normal’ or ‘Normative’ to me is an insult beyond compare. Call me a nutter, an a-hole, a bastard or any other negative thing, but if you want me to get my underwear in a twist just call me normal, I dare you. Continue reading
